One Version

While I was away the last few days I got to see a small glimpse of our wired future. The boat I was on had a laptop equipped with a wireless internet connection. It’s through Telus [can’t find a product link]. Basically it’s a 9,600 kpbs connection that is online all the time as long as the card is plugged into the laptop and near the Telus cell network. Since we were going around close to land, and in particular Vancouver Island the connection was fairly consistent.

I was able to access our internal company blogs, basic webmail but most importantly instant messaging for a few key conversations. It will be a very different world [whether we like it or not] when computers are connected all the time anywhere we are. I could actually get a significant amount of work done in the middle of the wilderness, so could many others I know. Now whether I would actually do that is another matter, but it would be really cool to have the choice, whenever I want.

I understand Telus has a new card out at 56,000 kpbs - curious to see how it works…
