Flash Gone Bad and My Shoe Rant

I’m not one to complain about clothes let alone shoes. Websites on the other hand I have lots of opinions.

Those who know me know that in general its hard to get me out of jeans and sneakers…that said the ones I do wear I wear a lot and really like. I like Camper shoes a lot. I’ve got pairs that are four years old, are in great shape (relatively all the pieces are still together) and that have travelled the world. The newer pairs are even better and almost more valued by me than far more expensive possessions I have. (yes I know that is strange)

I saw a new pair I wanted to get in California recently and meant to get them when I was back in Canada. I tried going to Campers web site to find them so I could show the local guy what I meant, and to check out their site.

It’s flash, and while it’s cute…it burns. The online catalogue is particularly loathsome…not as a design but as a way to find shoes!!! It’s especially weird considering how their shoes are simplicity and comfort put together really well.

I can’t find the shoes with any relative speed, the navigation is totally confusing…I sort of blindly clicked around till I sort of found what I wanted…and then got so frustrated I decided to close the window and complain about how bad the Campers shoe website is. The wack a mole navigation of the shoe categories is particularly baffling. Please somebody at Campers give me a non-flash, quick and easy view of your products. I want to buy something; make the picture or category so easy to find and obvious I can’t help but click on it. I think using design to show you have style and personality is great but the badly done web basics on your site is making me worry that the significant investment in another pair of Campers might not last me another four years.

On the positive side the site and subsequent rant did help me avoid some really important work I was supposed to be doing on Sunday night. Whew.
