Get Me My Fedora
Been having a crazy week at work in Hong Kong. Lots of progress made though…whew. As a side project I wanted to install a Linux distro on one of the machines here. Had some trouble getting the ISO files to burn cleanly to my CD’s so wandered the local computer stores for some cheap disks. No such luck but tons of ‘cracked’ Microsoft software for sale with a slight of hand and a black plastic bag…in fact almost every type imaginable, except for my Mac of course. There were slim pickings in the linux media department too so finally got help from one of the corporate linux offices here in procuring CD’s that booted without my hotel bandwidth provider freaking out about my overnight downloads.
It’s been a couple of years since I’ve taken a serious personal look at Linux and what a difference a few years makes. Wow. Soon…very soon I think companies are going to start realizing that the much slicker linux distro interfaces and installations packages are a much better value than security hole ridden versions of XP that won’t be changing for two more years. There’s still tons for me to learn and companies to master but it looks great (I’m playing with Fedora) and installs what I need (mozilla and IM) flawlessly.
